Birth of Venus by HuanTran Birth of Venus by HuanTran
A "how-to" illustration created for Adobe Illustrator CS6 showing some of the new features of CS6. This "how-to" was bundled with every copy of CS6 and also celebrates the 25th anniversary of Illustrator.

[ Link ] A link to Adobe's site if you're interested in seeing how some of this image is created. If I have the time, I might put a tutorial in the next publication of the Illustrator WOW! book series.

Congrats on the DD, and nice piece! Call me crazy, but the way she looks to be pleasuring herself with her long hair is strangely appealing too...

The anatomy of this is really awkward in a lot of ways. For one, her breasts are far too low on her chest. Her head is very tiny for her body, and looks even tinier thanks to her really long neck. Her shoulders look really slouched/melted and cause her arms to look oddly connected to her body. Her hip also juts funny and creates an awkward bend, which messes a bit with the flow of the picture.

However, I love the patterns used and those little angels C: The colors used are also very nice~ And the little door is done very well, too!

Well, maybe you have never seen the original Birth of Venus... because Venus, in the original paiting, has exactly the same anatomy that this. He changed a lot of things here, such has the environment, the hair colour, amongst other details. If he changed the anatomy too, it would be unrecognizable. Anyway, I think the anamoty is very pleasant on this rebirth, it looks kind of funny. In the original one, the purpose was to be realistic, so... it kind of fails.

Actually, I have to slightly disagree on the anatomy bit! He exaggerated the anatomy far more in places the rebirth. (though the old one is....Really awkward, too. Just a bit less so) He made the head a lot smaller, pulled the breasts even lower, and smoothed the transition at the hip a little too much to look natural. I personally don't like these exaggerations, but that's just me! If you like it, that's perfectly fine too C:

Well, I like it that way, but you might be right. After comparing so closely both pieces, you tend to be right.

I think the purpose was to be artistic more so than realistic- so the anatomy is intentionally exageratted. The orginal Birth of Venus is nearly flawless in anatomy- a remake would be dull if it were done the exact same way. But also- this is vector....and vector is not easy in terms of realism. However, if this were an attempt at realism...I'd agree that the anatomy is awkward. ^_^

The problem is that the exaggeration was done in a way that makes it visually unappealing to me. (of course this isn't the same for everyone, and everyone thinks differently!) It's exaggerated, sure, but not in the right ways. The exaggeration, I feel, detracts from the over all piece as opposed to improves it. Exaggerating just the neck, or making portions of the anatomy longer (waist, arms, legs- things that naturally can be longer on actual people) would've looked fine. But pulling the breasts down lower, making the head really tiny, and pulling the stomach in at the hip like that just kinda....Makes her look melty XD"

Of course this is just what I feel, and I'm not arguing that anyone else is wrong! I like art that's more anatomically correct, but that's just me C: (And I honestly can't tell if what I pointed out were mistakes, or intentional. They don't have enough art in their gallery for me to figure out)

Sorry for the long winded reply orz

Oh no- I love long-winded replies! I make them myself all the time. ^_^ And I totally respect that opinion. Not everything is good to everybody. ^_^ I prefer realism as well.

People don't do long winded replies enough :C (Nor do they normally comment on my opinions as politely) Exactly! I'm not saying the art is bad at all, either. I just personally found flaw in the exaggerations, and thought to point them out in case they actually WERE flaw.
